WordPress is one of the best open source content management software available for web masters, bloggers and other web designers.

“WordPress” keyword is searched in different forms by millions of users through google,bing,yandex and may other different search engines.

So, we as publishers might think of creating a website with the word “WordPress” included in our domain name like “wordpressthemes(dot)com” or “createwordpresswebsite(dot)com”…etc.

Why using WordPress in your domain name is not recommended?

WordPress is a open source software licensed under GPL founded by MattMullenweg and Mike Little on May 27 2003

Although the software is open source the name WordPress is a registered trademark owned by the WordPress foundation.

For people who don’t know about trademark:

A trademark is a word or logo registered legally to provide a specific product or service.There are many websites to check whether a word is trademarked or not like wipo or uspto.

Trademarks helps a company to distinguish it’s product and services from other companies. If a trademark is violated the original owner of the trademark has every right to open up a legal issue against the offender,

Before using the name WordPress or it’s logo in any form, prior permission is necessary from the WordPress foundation.

 

What is allowed ?

Although, WordPress foundation is strict with respect to the usage of the name WordPress. There is also a solution provided by the foundation to build a commercial WordPress service website.

Publishers, web masters or bloggers are free to use the acronym “WP” or the word “Press” in their domain name.This does not violate any of the trademark rights of the foundation.

There are many popular commercial service websites running without any issues with the keyword “WP” like wp engine, wp beginner…etc

The example as given by the foundation on how not to use their trademark:

For example, a consulting company can describe its business as “123 Web Services, offering WordPress consulting for small businesses,” but cannot call its business “The WordPress Consulting Company.” Similarly, a business related to WordPress themes can describe itself as “XYZ Themes, the world’s best WordPress themes,” but cannot call itself “The WordPress Theme Portal.”
